Beginning ice skaters should always wear helmets for head protection.
Figure Skating and Recreational Ice Skating Helmets
Wearing a helmet is a very important part of proper
dressing for beginning ice skaters. According to medical experts more
young ice skaters sustain head injuries than children engaging in other
skating sports for which protective helmets are always recommended, if
not required.
A study of skating injuries in the emergency room published in the
journal "Pediatrics" found that children injured in ice skating
accidents primarily sustained injuries to their heads and faces.
Skateboarders, on the other hand, were only treated for head injuries.
While children can be injured both ice skating and skateboarding, the
primary difference in the type of injuries they sustain is the use of
helmets. Not enough children on ice skates are wearing protective head
gear.
As to date no childrens' helmets have been developed specifically for
the ice, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recommended that
young ice skaters wear ski or skateboard helmets. Ski and skateboard
helmets provide more back of the head protection than bicycle helmets.
Some helmets are certified for both skateboarding and bicycling.
Ski helmets are generally somewhat more expensive, but they offer the
added advantage of extra warmth.
Whatever ice skating helmet you choose for your child, if the helmet
sustains a hard impact on the ice it will probably have to be replaced.
Known for combining great quality with design features that
children love, Razor children's multi-sport helmets are ideal for
ice skating and any other sport that requires protective headgear.
The helmet is equipped with ergonomic padding to keep the wearer
comfortable, along with 11 vents along the top and sides to
guarantee a cool head. Side release buckles make this helmet easy
for even a child to adjust and fasten. Designed to fit head sizes
between 21.5 to 23 inches, the children's V-17 includes extra pads
for even more comfort and complies with all Consumer Products
Safety Commission standards for ages 5 and older.
A toddler's head is very susceptible to injury on the ice. Keep
it well-protected with a helmet especially designed for small,
vulnerable heads. This toddler tricycle helmet will give your
little one the comfortable padding and hard shell necessary to
protect from a fall on the ice. Good ventilation with six vent
holes helps keep the youngest skaters on the ice from becoming
overheated. Fits a head size: 18" to 20" and appropriate for ages
from approximately 2 to 4.
